I am aware of Reddit. It is the first thing that comes to mind when people read a loud crazy stories on TikTok. I know Reddit is a great resource to ask for recommendations or opinions about a certain topic. However, I am not even remotely well-versed on what Reddit really is. So, I decided to do some research on the subject.
What is Reddit and Why Should You Care?
Reddit is often lumped in the "social media" category. However, it does not work the same way as Facebook or even X (formerly Twitter). Reddit is a network of communities based on different interests, such as cars, watches, hiking, AITA stories, etc. The point of Reddit is to share content and starting dialogue pertaining to the subject.
According to Backlinko, Reddit has a whopping 52 million active users, 48% based in the U.S. and 62% male [1]. So if this sounds like your target market, you might want to think about advertising on Reddit. Just in 2023, Reddit is expected to generate over $522 million in revenue through ads [2]!.
So, what are the steps to advertising on Reddit?
How to Advertise on Reddit
Reddit requires all users to create an account, this includes users who want to advertise on Reddit. You may use an existing account or create a new Ads Account.
To create an account to advertise on Reddit, you'll have to choose a unique username and password, as well as share your company's name, business email, country of location, and phone number (optional). You will also be prompted to choose a category for your business.
Once your account is set up, you can start advertising! Reddit has two types of campaigns you can choose from: "Simple Create" and "Advanced Create." Simple Create is great for a quick and straightforward ad campaign with some customization options, but definitely more streamlined. On the other hand, Advanced Create would be more suitable for complex and highly targeted campaigns. Advanced Create allows you to really hone in the target demographic as well as control your budget and even ad format choices. However, for purposes of this class, we'll explore what Simple Create looks like.
Simple Create allows you to upload a video or image for your ad. You can customize your headline, the landing page, and CTA button. More interestingly, you can get pretty specific with your targeting & Delivery options. I was able to create a custom target market based on Redditors' interest groups and community audiences.
The drawback of using Reddit Ads is that you really need to understand how subreddits and communities work, or at least know of them so you can add them to your target audience.
Other Things To Note
I would be remiss if I didn't mention that 72% of Reddit users access the platform via the Reddit App, both on mobile and tablet [
3], so keep that in mind for your creatives and choose an optimized image or video size!
