Exploring AI tools in Advertising

The advertising landscape is undergoing a profound transformation, with artificial intelligence (AI) at the forefront, driving innovation and efficiency like never before. Brands and marketers are leveraging cutting-edge AI tools to create compelling, personalized, and highly effective advertising campaigns.

ChatGPT stands out in content creation, generating creative and contextually relevant text that resonates with target audiences, while DALL-E 2 transforms the visual aspect of advertising by generating high-quality images from textual descriptions, pushing the boundaries of creativity. On the other hand, Photoshop’s AI generator is redefining image editing, making complex tasks simpler and more accessible.

However, with great power comes great responsibility, and the need for ethical AI usage is paramount. Tools like GPTZero play a crucial role in this context, evaluating the efficacy and potential biases in language models, ensuring transparency, and fostering trust in AI-powered advertising. As we delve deeper into the world of AI in advertising, the synergy of creativity and technology is not just enhancing the way we advertise but also reshaping the very fabric of marketing communication.

The entire paragraph you just read was created by GPT-4. Incredible, no? Moreover, the cover image for this blog post was generated by DALL-E 2. I used Photoshop's AI Generator to expand the vector size and color-match the image to my color palette. The advancements in AI and machine learning (ML) have significantly changed the landscape of the marketing world.

In this blog post, I will explain the process I followed to utilize AI tools in creating the content that I am sharing today. Additionally, I will discuss my plans for implementing a series of advertising campaigns on various platforms, with an emphasis on how AI has significantly improved and streamlined my workflow.

Overview of AI Tools Used to Make This Blog post

DALL-E 2 is an advanced artificial intelligence model designed to generate digital images from textual descriptions. By leveraging a vast dataset of images paired with descriptive text, it has developed a comprehensive understanding of how to translate written language into visual representations. This capability enables it to produce accurate and relevant illustrations, diagrams, or artistic images based on specific user input.

The versatility of DALL-E 2 makes it an invaluable tool for professionals in various fields, including marketing, design, and education, providing them with a streamlined and efficient method to visualize concepts, ideas, or products.

To use DALL-E 2, you need to create an account with openai.com. Unlike Chat-GPT, DALL-E 2 works based on credits. Credits are available for purchase through the DALL-E 2 website. For $15 you can get 115 credits. I have generated a total of 36 graphics and I have 106 credits remaining.

My first attempt was to create a watercolor image of a bougainvillea on a Mexican-style hacienda. I was impressed by the output!

I have always said I am creative, but not an artist. I know I could not have made this vector by myself from scratch. I wanted to try creating something more whimsical to describe my overall thoughts on AI in marketing. So I tried generating a new image: "Van Gogh style painting of a humanoid robot dressed in a suit working on a computer in a pale pink background."

DALL-E 2 and I might have different ideas of what a pale pink background is, but other than that, the output was spot on! I then took the image to Photoshop to use the generative AI feature to expand the vector to a suitable size for this post's heading.

Lastly, I used GPT-4 a "
state-of-the-art language model that represents the latest advancement in OpenAI’s efforts in natural language processing," says GPT-4. On the other hand, ChatGPT is optimized for "conversational use cases."

GPT-4 is an ML algorithm with extensive training data that can generate highly relevant and contextually accurate responses. I have personally tried prompting in both English and Spanish and the accuracy has been impressive. Unlike ChatGPT, GPT-4 is a paid tool you can access for $20 per month.

Although it's not a mind-reading algorithm, you must carefully and descriptively ask your prompts, it takes hours of research and drafting into a few seconds of typing. A game-changer in the content creation, copy, and marketing fields.

How Does AI Technology Affect the Marketing Landscape?

There is no question that AI tools are here to stay. They can help streamline tasks, such as research and copywriting, or alleviate the responsibilities of creative work, like designing graphics or flyers. For a small business with limited access to scale resources like an ad agency, these AI tools might be what's missing to create the content they need to reach their customers.

In the next eight weeks, I will explore the use of these AI technologies and more as I create different ad campaigns for a small business across various platforms. The purpose is to analyze how AI makes marketing simpler, and in what ways, if any, proves to be a hindrance.

To close off this initial post, I wanted to check the accuracy of GPTZero. I copied/pasted the text above into GPTZero, and the Princeton-developed app told me my text is likely 35% AI-generated. It also highlighted the sentences thought to have come from AI.

The results are not 100% accurate. It highlighted several sentences completely written by me, actually poking fun at the AI tool's missteps. Maybe it was retaliation? Or maybe I'm part humanoid?
